Why Are Canada Geese a Problem?
A few geese on the lawn might look harmless. But they can cause real trouble for your family and property:

- Injuries: They hiss, chase, and attack. Kids and pets are most at risk of getting hurt.
- Property damage: They overgraze your lawn and leave droppings around doors, patios, and walkways.

House sparrows are not native to Canada. They are small, but they can cause big headaches:
- Health risks: They can pass germs to people, pets, and livestock. These include salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, chlamydiosis, erysipeloid, and Newcastle disease. Some of these illnesses can be serious.
- Property damage: Their nests and droppings can damage roofs, vents, signs, and other parts of your building. They also tear up your landscaping.
- Harm to native birds: They are aggressive and push out birds like tree swallows, chickadees, and bluebirds.

What Does a Woodpecker Look Like?
Woodpeckers come in olive, brown, black, white, or red, or a mix of these. They are 7 to 50 cm long, with a wingspan of up to 75 cm.
They belong to the Picidae family and are found almost worldwide. Many have a small tuft of feathers (a crest) on top of the head.
Why Do Woodpeckers Peck?
Woodpeckers peck for a few simple reasons:
- To find food: They hunt for insects in dead or rotting trees. They also peck at siding, buildings, metal, and air conditioners.
- To make a home: They carve out holes for nesting or storing food.
- To send a message: They drum to talk to other woodpeckers.
Are Woodpeckers a Problem?
It depends on where they peck. On trees, they are helpful because they eat insect pests. On your home, they are a different story:
- Noise: The pecking is loud, and it often starts early in the morning.
- Damage: Pecking can damage your siding and other parts of your home.

What Does a Black-Billed Magpie Look Like?
Magpies have strong black-and-white feathers. They are 45 to 60 cm long. (Please check the wingspan; see note below.)
Also called the American magpie (Pica hudsonia). It has a long, tapered tail and is found across Alberta and western Canada. They will eat nearly anything.
Why Are Magpies a Problem?
Magpies are smart and not picky eaters, which is why they show up around homes and farms:
- They eat almost anything. That includes other birds’ eggs.
- They hide food underground. Magpies sometimes bury food in caches around your yard.
- They can carry germs. Like other birds, magpies may pass illnesses to people and pets, including West Nile virus.
Can You Remove Magpies Yourself?
Unlike many other pest birds in Alberta, you can hunt and trap magpies without a licence. But removing the birds doesn’t fix why they came. If food, garbage, or easy shelter is drawing them in, new birds will move in later.
